Outdoor Painting With Confidence
The light’s changing and you want to create an exciting record of what’s before you. It’s the time to make quick decisions. Where to begin? Join Clark Mitchell for three days of spectacular outdoor painting at the incomparable Warnecke Ranch, Healdsburg, California and find out! It is a plein air painters paradise.
Learn a methodical approach to confident outdoor painting.
We’ll focus on:
Scene selection.
Thumbnail sketching.
Composition exercises.
Underpainting to save time.
Getting your values and color temperature right.
Simplifying.
Finishing touches.
Daily demos in soft pastel. (Other drawing and painting mediums are welcome. The principles being taught apply to all forms of outdoor painting.)
Some painting experience a must.
Plenty of personal attention.
Daily plan:
First morning: We’ll meet indoors to get acquainted, receive handouts and review some basics. Then we’ll go out to paint!
I will do an underpainting demo. Then you all find your inspiration. So much to choose from: ponds, vineyards, wonderful old buildings and trucks, wide vistas, intimate gnarled trees, views of the Russian River.
Everyone works on their own project. I come around often to answer questions and make suggestions. Instruction will be geared to each participant’s skill level.
Second day: outdoors entirely.
Third day: morning painting, afternoon indoor critique and wrap-up.
Class meets 9 to 4 daily
Bring a sack lunch - there are wonderful shady picnic areas to gather midday.
Learn how to take your outdoor paintings to the next level!
Note:If you like painting "big" expansive scenic vistas, the best views on the ranch are from the hilltops, and as parking on these dirt tracks is limited, a short walk or car shuttle ride may to necessary to reach these painting locations - don't worry, all your painting gear (and you!) can be dropped off by vehicle. Alternative painting locations will always be available for those that would like to say down closer to the main facilities. You will be spoiled for choices everywhere you look. This is a plein air painters paradise.
